Frequently Asked Questions
1)
How long have Hudon and Son
been involved with Sawmills?
Circle mills since 1970 and bandsaw mills since 1976.
2)
How many board feet of lumber can you saw a day with the Farm-Boss?
We have seen 600 to 2500 board feet of 1" and 2"
lumber sawn in a single day.
Varying conditions; such as log size, log cleanliness,
and finished product dimensions affect production rates.
3)
Is there a production advantage using a Hud-Son bandmill instead of a circle
mill?
You will produce 25-30% more yield with the Hud-Son
bandmill due to reduced cut width (kerf).
You will also see a smoother finished product than
circle mills produce.
4)
Can you re-sharpen the band-blades?
Yes, you can re-sharpen and set back the teeth.
A blade used for cutting clean wood may typically be re-sharpened 4-6 times.
5)
Are blades expensive?
The price on blades varies from one supplier to
another; quality also varies.
We have seen 13' long blades sell for twenty to
thirty Dollars, depending on volume.
Save, buy direct from a band blade manufacturer.
Hud-Son Sawmills are sold with DoubleHard blades produced by Wood-Mizer.
Contact them direct at 1-800-553-0182 for your band
blade order.
6)
Are there different blades for different types of wood?
Yes, we use a blade that is good in both soft and
hardwood. If you are looking for special type blades, we recommend discussing
with a blade manufacturer the condition and type of wood you will be cutting.
They will recommend a tooth spacing best for your project.
7)
How can I make my blades last longer?
A. Saw into clean timber. We offer a
de-barker called a "log wizard" that will de-bark a single path in front of the
blade to the end of
the log or you may accessorize your mill with a mud saw
which performs the same function.
B. Do not leave the blade running unnecessarily.
Only keep blade engaged while sawing.
C. Sharpen bands regularly.
8)
Can you Custom Build a Bandmill for our needs?
If you're looking to custom saw something special, the answer is yes,
we will gladly quote you. Please call us so we may understand your needs.
9)
Why is the Hud-Son dual beam, four post head mill design superior over the
cantilever single beam mill design?
A cantilever single beam design hangs the blade out over the log. The
blade is suspended from one side of the head and counter weighted by
the engine.
It runs along a single track. The blade is held from one side and can bounce or
sag while cutting and/or during transport, producing a wavy cut.
